ABOUT WORD-PAINTINGS
Word-paintings are inspirational works of fine art, compositions of letters and words.
Word-paintings may be considered the Western style sibling
of traditional, larger format Asian and Middle Eastern calligraphy.
Word-paintings have little in common with traditional Western calligraphy.
My word-paintings intend to communicate food for thought.
Due to artistic design some of the word creations may be difficult to read;
the explicative foot note includes a reference to the author of the content.
Every work is dated, signed, stamped and executed with artist quality materials.
ABOUT PIET LEUTSCH
Painter, printer, word-painter
St-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec, Canada
I grew up in the world of Chinese culture in Shanghai, China.
Watching a Chinese artist friend adding columns of characters to his brush paintings
I was eager to learn to write myself.
At age twelve, I received a personal stamp as a gift with my European name carved in
Chinese characters which I still use on my prints and word-paintings.
Later in Europe I enrolled in the state art academy of Berlin,
the ‘Hochschule für Bildende Künste’, attending
courses in drawing, printing techniques, photo design, calligraphy and logo design .
My calligraphy teacher was a right-arm-handicapped war veteran.
He was fascinated with the beauty of letters and the written word so much he forced himself
to relearn writing with his left hand and eventually became a teacher.
I admired his will power, sensed his passion and soon started to share the love of letters.
While working as a professional designer and artist I developed the habit of taking notes of my favorite
aphorisms and proverbs in a calligraphic manner.
After emigration to Canada in the 1980s I started to design some of these quotes in a
more free artistic style, engraved some in woodblocks and printed them.
The Montreal gallery which represented my art work proposed in 2005 an exhibition of antique Asian
calligraphy combined with contemporary Western word-paintings.
Four artists including myself were showing their creations.
The exhibition was a novelty and venture for the gallery; the public interest however was surprisingly vivid.
A professor from McGill university of Montreal assigned his students to interpret the images.
Later the word-painters were invited to attend a McGill
colloquium held with students present; the student's elaborate and amazing
interpretations (recited by the professor) demonstrated the potential impact of word-paintings.
